Shift: Evening (United States of America)Responsible for the
day-to-day supervision and coordination of the overall function of
the Central Processing Department including the management of
sterile and unsterile, disposable and reusable medical/surgical
supplies, equipment, and instrumentation. Participates in
scheduling responsibilities, ongoing in service/training programs,
and oversees the daily operational activities required for the
effectiveness of the department on all shifts while maintaining
optimal control of CPD standards. In the absence of CPD Manager,
under the direction of the covering Administrative Clinical Lead,
able to assume the responsibility of the department according to
need. Completes annual performance appraisals as required also
counsels and disciplines employees in accordance with SSH
policies.
Responsible for Supply Chain inventory and equipment within
Perioperative Services including purchasing special order supplies,
services and equipment at competitive prices while maintaining
budgetary goals and utilizing accepted purchasing practices.
Develop systems for standardizing products, tracking repair costs
and cost containment goals. Coordinate the procurement of supplies
and capital equipment including special orders in both routine and
emergence situations. Coordinate service and repair of equipment as
provided for under service contracts and the bioengineering
provider. Act as a leader in product evaluation, recall and
failures of supplies and equipmentEssential Functions:1 - Actively
participates in Performance Improvement Activities and Programs a -
Plans, organizes and facilitates all department PI activities. b -
Demonstrates proper documentation of mechanical, chemical and
biological controls on a daily basis for all sterilizers. c -
Maintains accurate records of all sterilization processes and
maintains files accordingly.2 - Identifies problems and effectively
communicates to the Manager of Perioperative Services in order to
meet customer needs to assure overall quality of care delivered. a
- Tracks shift reports to ensure accurate increasing or decreasing
sterilizer usage. b - Communicates all customer service problems to
the Manager of Perioperative Services. c - Actively assists in
problem solving with the CPD Management Team to ensure ever
increasing internal and external customer services. d - Conveys a
positive customer service attitude toward user departments, peers
and subordinates. Answers telephone in a courteous manner at all
times. e - Assures education of the CPD staff regarding proper
care, handling, and assembly of instrumentation and equipment. f -
Assures timely delivery of supplies and equipment to appropriate
department/unit. g - Assures that the sterility of items stored in
CPD has not been compromised and action is taken to reprocess if
necessary. h - Demonstrates the ability to organize all work areas
for efficient and effective processing. i - Demonstrates an
understanding for rotating all stock and proper par levels of
supplies. j - Maintains ongoing education programs on supplies and
equipment for all CPD personnel.
k. Maintains an Index Book of surgical instruments and supplies
giving the location and alternative names of those items.
l. Serves as a resource person in such areas as sterilization,
stock rotation methods, arrangement of trays, and proper use of
maintenance of supplies and equipment, decontamination,
reprocessing (including sterilization), and patient charges.3 -
Complies with accreditation and regulatory bodies and commissions
in relation to OR materials management. a - Maintains systems to
assure compliance in regards to item tracking. b - Makes decisions
based on knowledge with assistance from Systems Coordinator. c -
Maintains a quality control program to ensure compliance with
institutional/departmental policies and procedures as well as Joint
Commission and OSHA standards.4 - Responsible for following all
organization and department precautions and procedures in the
performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment for
self and others. a - Demonstrates knowledge of South Shore Health &
Educational Corporation policies and procedures for decontamination
of supplies and equipment. b - Demonstrates knowledge of South
Shore Health & Educational Corporation policies and procedures for
proper assembly and packaging of all supplies and equipment. c -
Demonstrates knowledge of South Shore Health & Educational
Corporation policies and procedures for all required sterilization
methods. d - Demonstrated knowledge of AORN and Central Services
standards and recommendations pertaining to CPD.8 - Supports
Perioperative Service Supply and Equipment Manager by supporting
and coordinating program development activities.9 - Understands
sterilization process on various instruments and equipment. a -
Provides mechanism to identify what type of sterilization is
necessary for various items. b - Discusses and recommends type of
sterilization for new items in collaboration with Surgical
Inventory Coordinator. c - Provides oral and written education for
CPD and OR staff to ensure proper processes are followed. d -
Provides current information on instrumentation, equipment, and
sterilization processes by maintaining and updating the CPD data
base.10 - Supervises case cart set-ups for accuracy and
completeness. a - Reviews surgical schedule and case carts on an
on-going basis. b - Oversees documentation and reports of missing
or substituted items to OR and appropriate CPD staff. c - Serves as
the backup for SIC and reviews the surgical schedule then generates
the case cart pick lists for the following day.11 - Is responsible
for department's operational excellence; assures department
delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies,
procedures and professional standards. a - Manages all activities
so that quality services are provided in an efficient and effective
manner, as observed by Director of Perioperative Services. b -
Creates and maintains an environment that fosters innovation. c -
Develops and provides services that meet all applicable regulatory
requirements. d - Participates in Performance Improvement programs
that meet JCAHO and other regulatory agency requirement standards
as evidenced by reports. e - Maintains departmental productivity
measurements; reports status monthly. f - Directs department
activities in a manner consistent with organization-wide programs
and procedures. g - Assists with developmental, review and revision
of departmental policies and procedures that reflect the
organization's standards. h - Assists with the development and
implementation of strategic plan for department.12 - Manages human
resources to assure quality services and promotes positive employee
relations, as required by the CPD Nurse Manager. a - Consistently
and fairly implements human resources policies. b - Maintains
effective and appropriate staffing by monitoring employee turnover,
overtime and absenteeism. c - Assists with employee performance
appraisals in collaboration with the CPD Management Team. d -
Follows human resources policies to implement progressive
discipline, when necessary, as required by the Director of
Perioperative Services. e - Collaborates with human resources and
the CPD Management Team for the recruitment and selection of
qualified employment candidates, following all policies, guidelines
and applicable laws, as required by the Director of Perioperative
Services. f - Is recognized as a positive role model.13 - Assist
Manager with fiscal management of department; assures proper
utilization of organization's financial resources. a - Assist
Manager with preparing department budgets.14 - Effectively
communicates departmental, organization and industry information to
staff. a - Promotes regular, comprehensive communication with CPD
Management Team and all other staff. b - Attends organization's
informational meetings, as evidenced by attendance sheets. c -
Gathers, interprets, and delivers information to staff in a timely
fashion. d - Assures staff understands information as evidenced by
staff compliance with, and participation in, Hospital programs,
seminars, training and related activities. e - Exhibits effective
communication with staff for conflict resolution which otherwise
may hamper relations and productivity, as observed by the Director
of Perioperative Services. f - Utilizes Hospital communication
resources to inform internal and external customers of departmental
news/achievements/policies. 15 - Attains all agreed goals and
objectives within specified time frames, as part of the
organization's overall mission. a - (List specific goals for
current year) b - Develops annual departmental objectives to
support institutional goals and objectives, and strives to attain
same.16 - Technology - Embraces technological solutions to work
processes and practices. - a - Utilizes Lotus Notes to provide
information of changes and additions to department practices and
processes via email and databases. b - Utilizes the OR Manager to
generate surgical schedules and pick lists for case carts. c -
Utilizes ReportXpress to track employees' badging time with special
regard to South Shore Hospital's policy on attendance and
punctuality. d - Utilizes MediTech to complete the on-line ordering
process for supplies. e - Utilizes Lotus Notes data bases to keep
knowledge current and to report changes or problems. f - Utilizes
new technology such as digital cameras and images to provide
educational and informational tools to CPD, OR, and other
departments within the organization.17 - Safety Awareness - Fosters
a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to
a safe environment. a - Successfully answers safety questions in
annual mandatory education program and insures that staff completes
the required educational programs. b - Understands individual and
departmental roles/responsibilities during hospital codes (e.g.,
Code Green, Code Red). c - Operates all department equipment safely
and maintains staff competency in equipment safety. d - Knows where
to find and utilize material safety data sheets (MSDS) for items
used to perform job. e - Follows all CDC guidelines for Universal
Precautions when handling soiled equipment, instruments, and
supplies and enforces these guidelines for CPD staff. f - Uses and
provides staff with personal protective equipment and knowledge of
proper body mechanics when performing all aspects of the job. g -
Properly handles and disposes of biohazard waste by following
Infection Control guidelines and hospital policy and enforces
department compliance in the policies and guidelines. h - Obtains
annual TB test and monitors staff complianceMinimum Education -
PreferredPrinciples of Management and Supervision for Central
Services Personnel course by IAHCSMM preferred.Minimum Work
ExperienceSix (6) years' experience in Central Services Department
with at least three (3) years' experience at a supervisory level
preferred.Required Certifications -CRCST - Certified Registered
Central Service TechnicianRequired Licenses / Registrations If you
will be driving a SSH vehicle as part of your job, a valid MA
driver's license in good standing is required as well as
verification of an acceptable motor vehicle driving record, at time
of hire, with annual verification required thereafter. Required
additional Knowledge, and Abilities
Supervisory experience.
Current membership in IAHCSMM (International Association of
Healthcare Central Service Material Management).
Prefer strong knowledge of PC, including, but not limited to, Word,
Windows and Excel.
Specific knowledge of aseptic technique, microbiology,
sterilization, inventory control, surgical case cart system,
surgical equipment, instrumentation, and procedures, as well as
medical/surgical devices and equipment and manufacturers
requirements as necessary.
